Question 1

How often should a fire risk assessment be reviewed?

Accepted Answer

There is no fixed legal interval, but the assessment must be kept under review and updated when it is no longer valid or the building changes. Most businesses review at least once a year, and sooner after any significant change, such as a refit, a change of use or a fire.

Question 2

Is an annual review a legal requirement?

Accepted Answer

Not by that wording. The legal duty is to keep the assessment under review and update it when it is no longer valid. Annual review is the widely accepted way to demonstrate that you are doing so.

Question 3

Do small businesses need a written assessment?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Since 1 October 2023 the assessment must be recorded in full by every responsible person, whatever the size of the business.
