Fire alarm maintenance checklist for business premises
Weekly tests, six-monthly servicing and a proper logbook. A practical checklist for keeping your fire alarm compliant.
Pro-Active Fire Safety · · 3 min read
The short answer: a business fire alarm should be tested weekly by someone on site (a different call point each week), serviced by a competent engineer at least every six months, and every event recorded in a logbook. Faults should be fixed promptly and never left to build up.
The checklist
Weekly
Operate one manual call point, confirm the panel and sounders respond, and rotate the call point each week. Record the result in the logbook.
Every six months
A full service by a competent engineer covering panel, detectors, call points, sounders, batteries and cause-and-effect checks.
After any change
If you alter the layout, add partitions or change use, check alarm coverage.
Faults and false alarms
Log each one, investigate the cause, and get repairs done quickly.
Records
Keep the logbook, service reports and certificates together and accessible.
Why records matter
Insurers, fire officers and assessors will ask to see them. A well-kept logbook shows you have taken your responsibilities seriously.
Keeping false alarms down
Common causes include dust and steam near detectors, contractor work and faulty devices. Cover and protect detectors during works, and tell us if the alarm is going off without a clear cause.
Common questions
Who should do the weekly test? A trained person on site, such as a nominated warden or facilities lead.
What if a detector keeps triggering? Log it and call us. Detectors may need cleaning, relocating or replacing.
Do you offer maintenance contracts? Yes, plus remote alarm monitoring if you want it.
